  • Write and publish work using a computer

  • Talk to your child about your/their writing

  • Listen to children talk about their written activities

  • Talk about famous books, what makes them good? How does the type of language help to interest the reader?

  • Play a variety of word games, e.g. scrabble, crosswords and association

  • Talk about current events to create opinions

  • Talk to your child about the different punctuation found in writing

  • Use dictionaries or a thesaurus to find out about unfamiliar words

  • Identify and write for an audience

  • Give background information in relation to the writing, e.g. who, what, where, when and why?

  • Encourage your child when he/she is writing at home to identify and correct mistakes

  • Cut out letters from old magazines or newspapers to make messages

  • Write lists - ‘Things I need for the shop’, ‘Games to play when I am bored’

  • Write letters, cards, notes and emails to friends and family

  • Work together on the small word games found in the children’s section (or word section) of the newspaper

  • Cut out words and letters to make stories, puzzles and codes
